For The Last Funeral of Buffalo Baeker, I drew inspiration from a Midsomer Murder episode of a man who liked to hold dry runs for his funeral, procession and all.
I then set the story in my small Arkansas town, and in a year - 1980 - when I was still young enough to run around like a Huckleberry Finn wanna-be.
My young hero Elm is a boy who learns to see beyond
the crazy whims of a rich man
- a man important enough to have a whole town practice for his funeral.
And on the day of Mr. Buffalo's last funeral, Elm is going to prove
the hated Southern eccentric was a good man.
